Thanks, Sky.  As much as I like Winwood's version, Zevon's take on the song is just jaw-droppingly good.  He takes Winwood's optimistic protagonist and turns him into an unredeemable loser, trying to fool himself one last time that he can still turn his hopelessly ruined life around.  Typically, wonderfully Zevon!
